The Language Privacy Policy

Last updated: 11 October 2026

The Language ("the app") helps students learn Mandarin Chinese for the HSK exam. This page explains what information the app uses. The app is operated by The Language. Questions: anbushra014@gmail.com.

Short version

What is stored on your phone

Your progress, settings (for example the Bengali translation switch and your daily reminder time), and a saved copy of the lessons, teacher recordings and study material you have opened, so the app also works without internet. You can remove all of it by deleting the app.

What the app downloads

Lessons, videos, PDF study materials and teacher voice recordings are downloaded from our online storage (provided by Supabase). As with any internet request, the hosting service can see technical details such as your IP address and the time of the request. We do not link these requests to you personally.

Microphone and speaking practice

The microphone is used only while you are doing a speaking quiz, and only after you allow it. Speech is recognised by your phone's own speech recognition (Apple or Google), which may send the audio to Apple or Google under their privacy policies. In speaking quizzes we do not send your recording to any other service and we do not keep it.

Accounts, country and purchases (all learners)

Lessons, quizzes, practice and mock exams need an account (the Translator and Lesson 1 of each course do not). When you create an account we store your email address, your name and the country you choose (Bangladesh or another country, which decides the price list), and what you have bought or been given access to, plus your mock-exam attempts. Payments are handled by the payment provider (SSLCommerz for bKash, Nagad and cards; Apple or Google for store purchases). We receive only the result of the payment (item, amount, status, reference) and never your card or wallet details. Students of an institution whose institution has paid get access without paying, and see no prices. You can delete your account in the app (My account > Delete my account); this removes your account and purchase record from our service. Purchases are not refunded when an account is deleted.

No wallet. The app does not hold your money; each purchase is paid directly. Credits earned by watching ads are kept as a number in your account and have no cash value. Purchases are non-refundable (see the Refund Policy).

Translator, camera and photos

If you use the Translator, text you type or speak is sent to an online translation service to be translated. If you choose Camera, Photo or Video, the picture (or a few still frames of the video) is sent through our server to Google Cloud Vision and Translation to read and translate the writing. The app and our server do not keep your pictures or text. The camera and photo library are used only when you tap those buttons and allow access.

Notifications

The optional daily reminder is a notification created on your phone. It does not use a server and you can turn it off in the app (My progress) or in your phone settings.

Accounts and classes (students of a language institution)

To join a class, a student creates an account with an email address and password, and types a name and the class code from their teacher. We store the email address, the name, which class the student joined, the quizzes they take and their scores, and the results of the HSK mock tests they take while signed in. The teachers of that class (and the administrator) can see this information; no one else can. Lessons, files, videos and quizzes that a teacher adds for a class are private to that class. Students can leave a class, or delete their account in the app (My class > Delete my account), which removes their account and all of this information. The passwords are handled by our hosting service (Supabase); we never see them.

Teachers

Teachers sign in to the Teacher Portal with an email address and password created for them by the administrator. We store that email address, the files, recordings, quizzes and lessons they create, and, for institution teachers, the classes they run. Teachers see only the students of their own classes.

Teachers who sell courses: profiles, photos and videos

An independent teacher who sells courses gives us a display name, a title or qualification, a short introduction, a profile photo, a cover picture and an optional introduction video of up to 60 seconds. After the administrator approves them, these are shown to every learner in the app. Course lessons, videos, slides and documents a teacher uploads are stored in private storage and are shown only to learners who bought the course (and to the free preview lesson). Teachers also give a payout account (for example a bKash number or bank details), which only the administrator can see.

Phone alerts for teachers

If a teacher switches on phone alerts in the Teacher app, we store a notification address for that phone (a token from Apple or Google, through Expo) together with the teacher's account. We use it only to tell the teacher about their own lectures, profile, course sales and payouts. Switching alerts off or signing out removes it.

Ratings

A learner who bought a teacher course can give it 1 to 5 stars. We store the star value with the learner's account so each learner can rate once and change it. Stars are shown to others only as an average and counts, never with the learner's name. There are no written comments.

Store purchases

If you buy in the App Store or Google Play, Apple or Google processes the payment and RevenueCat (our purchase service) tells our server which item was bought. We receive the item, the amount, the store reference and your account id, never your card details. A store refund removes the item from your account.

Children

The app is made for learners of all ages. Public learners give us no personal information. Accounts for class students are created by or with the knowledge of their institution; children under 13 should use the app with a parent or teacher's guidance.

Sharing

We do not sell personal information and do not share it for advertising. Service providers we rely on (Supabase for hosting, Apple and Google for the app stores and speech recognition) process data only as described above.

Your choices

You can deny the microphone or notification permission and still use lessons, quizzes and the mock test. To ask a question or request that any information we hold about you (for example a teacher account) is removed, write to anbushra014@gmail.com.
